We recently reported the assignment of the methyl and methylene regions in the 150 MHz 13C NMR spectra of regioregular polypropylenes with different tacticities. In this article, we complete the assignment by extending it to the methine region. Despite a comparatively low resolution, the methine resonance provides additional information that can be of use in the configurational analysis of these polymers. Moreover, its chemical shift spreading can be predicted quantitatively in terms of semiempirical methods based on the ç-gauche effect, with an appropriate choice of the parameter scheme.

Abstract

We recently reported the assignment of the methyl and methylene regions in the 150 MHz 13C NMR spectra of regioregular polypropylenes with different tacticities. In this article, we complete the assignment by extending it to the methine region. Despite a comparatively low resolution, the methine resonance provides additional information that can be of use in the configurational analysis of these polymers. Moreover, its chemical shift spreading can be predicted quantitatively in terms of semiempirical methods based on the ç-gauche effect, with an appropriate choice of the parameter scheme.
