A jump-diffusion process is proposed to obtain a phenomenological description of the displacements performed by single myosin heads along actin filaments during their rising phases. Our results appear to be in agreement with some recent data by Kitamura et al. (1999). In order to take into account ATP hydrolysis effects, jumps performed by the myosin head are assumed to be due to sequences of Poisson distributed energy-supplying pulses with random amplitudes that are described by a mixture of three Gaussian distributions. Certain significant analogies and qualitative agreements with the biological data are finally pointed out.

Abstract

A jump-diffusion process is proposed to obtain a phenomenological description of the displacements performed by single myosin heads along actin filaments during their rising phases. Our results appear to be in agreement with some recent data by Kitamura et al. (1999). In order to take into account ATP hydrolysis effects, jumps performed by the myosin head are assumed to be due to sequences of Poisson distributed energy-supplying pulses with random amplitudes that are described by a mixture of three Gaussian distributions. Certain significant analogies and qualitative agreements with the biological data are finally pointed out.
