The aim of this book is to give, within due limits, an idea of matters related to the "hot" topic of working time. After dealing with the basic trends observed, an outline is provided of the relevance of hours worked to the economic sector concerned, without neglecting the role played by flexibility. Subsequently, after sketching a picture of the main labour market indicators for most of the OECD countries, we focus on the re-emergence of the working time debate by underlining the main arguments, for and against, regarding a work-sharing policy. At the end of the relation between employment and work-week duration is analyzed in different models.

Abstract

The aim of this book is to give, within due limits, an idea of matters related to the "hot" topic of working time. After dealing with the basic trends observed, an outline is provided of the relevance of hours worked to the economic sector concerned, without neglecting the role played by flexibility. Subsequently, after sketching a picture of the main labour market indicators for most of the OECD countries, we focus on the re-emergence of the working time debate by underlining the main arguments, for and against, regarding a work-sharing policy. At the end of the relation between employment and work-week duration is analyzed in different models.
