Abstract

Safety of ancient masonry leaning towers resting on compressible soils is evaluated by comparing current to critical tilt values corresponding to limit states affecting either the structure or the ground – foundation subsystems. It is deemed that the search for the most critical condition could be fostered by the proposed unified approach of geotechnical and structural topics that are traditionally dealt with separately.
