A content and language integrated approach is the focus of this work which aims to present a theme-based learning path involving English language and literature. The chose topic is 'the journey' in contemporary English literature. Four novels will be introduced and analysed from different perspectives in order to increase students' knowledge of the English language on the one hand and to present strategies and activities to enhance close and critical reading of literature on the other. The novels chosen for investigation are: The Songlines by B. Chatiwin, The Search by G. Dyer, Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and The curios incident of the dog in the night-time by M. Haddon. The above titles have been chosen for three reasons: first they all belong to contemporary English literature; second they all deal with the journey as discovery of the self and of the others and third, despite the topic likeness, they are all conceived and structured in different ways as to narrative technique, style and tone.
