Fragments of stained glass were found at the Kariye Camii in the 1957 excavations of the bema of the main church. A.H.S. Megaw related the discovery in a 1963 publication. Lead cames were found at the east end of the paraekklesion, where also some unpainted, thin window glass fragments came to light. At the church of Christ Pantokrator (Zeyrek Camii), similar window glass fragments were found at about the same time, in a vault below the bema of the south church, mixed with lead cames and other debris. The stained glass fragments recovered in the Chora and in the Pantocrator were deposited in Byzantine section of the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul and in the Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Collection, where they are now displayed in part. Although the history of their discovery is well known, these glass fragments are among the most controversial examples of medieval stained glass and are best discussed together. Abstract

Megaw’s article will be taken as a point of departure for the following essay.
