This paper deals with the analytical expression of the uncertainty on edge localization in image analysis applications. The analysis carried out relates analytically the uncertainty affecting the intensity of the input image to the output uncertainty of the edge detectors based on first- and second-derivative properties. The theoretical results are validated through experimental tests that are performed on real images that are acquired under typical conditions of an industrial environment.
