This paper investigates the process of teaching / learning that leads to the acquisition of the periphrasis ir a + infinitive in Spanish. In particular, it examines the influence of the metalinguistic awareness. Our study starts from the assumption that the positive effect on competition periphrasis use depends on the type of metalinguistic proposal. It explores the relationship between different types of explicit metalinguistic competence and use of the periphrasis. It describes the contrast between four groups of college students who had experienced different teaching, measuring five tests based on the four basic skills: listening, writing, speaking and writing (guided and free). Also, it polls its explicit metalinguistic ability. Analysis of these data reveals the existence of an influence between the type of metalinguistic awareness and the degree of competence in the use of the periphrasis
