The present volume collects the essays presented at the seminar The New Italian Aesthetics, which was organized in Palermo (October 27-28, 2001) by the International Centre for the Study of Aesthetics. At the beginning of the new millennium, the Seminar aimed at assessing the state of Italian aesthetics and the new areas explored by current research in Italy. Eighteen young, emerging scholars were chosen with great care to represent the most relevant research trends and the most significant geographic and cultural realities that enrich Italian scholarship in the field of aesthetics. As the editor of the volume underlines (L. Russo, The New Italian Aesthetics), the resulting wonderful overview of the Italian state of the art in aesthetics was striking, both for the variety of areas of investigation and the ability to capture aspects of the Novum, as well as for the precision and wealth of analytical approaches. These approaches range from the rediscovery or innovative re-reading of important themes and scholars of aesthetics of the past (E. Di Stefano, Pomponio Gaurico and the Aesthetics of Sculpture; S. Tedesco, Petrus Ramus and the Reasons of Baroque Aesthetics; G. Pinna, The Appearance of the Subject: On the Hegelian Notion of the Portrait; A. Contini, The Aesthetic and the Biologic: Intersections on the Border between Two Knowledges; F. Fimiani, Animality and the Memory of Images; E. Tavani, The Fragment and the Ruin: On Some Legacies of Twentieth-Century Aesthetics), to the analysis of major issues in contemporary debates (A. Pinotti, Art and Memory: Starting from Warburg; P. Kobau, Mimesis and Indirect Perception: Starting from Gibson; R. Messori, Language and Spatiality: Starting from Meschonnic; G. Matteucci, A Genealogy of Aesthetic Judgement; O. Meo, The Constructivist Approach to Aesthetics; S. Vizzardelli, On Vladimir Jankélévich’s Mystic Realism) and of crucial topical subjects (F. Scrivano, The State of Sculpture after Sculpture; M. Mazzocut-Mis, The Aesthetics of Touch and Sight; S. Catucci, The Aesthetics of Inhabiting; R. Diodato, The Aesthetics of the Virtual; R. Troncon, Applied Aesthetics: A New Perspective in the Philosophy of Art?; G. Patella, Aesthetics and the Challenge of Cultural Studies). Abstract
