Abstract

The city of Naples has maintained the original shape of the old set-up, and therefore represents a “living” document from which valuable information can be obtained, by simply walking along its streets, which all correspond to the Greco-Roman lay-out. In the old town centre, there is an area where a Theatre as well as an Odeon can be found, an important testimony to an urban set up, with the addition of factories, which are spontaneously overlapping in order to deal with the demanding accommodation needs. The problem of recovery is complex and not clearly defined: do you need to eliminate everything that covers all the most significant monuments (in our case the Theatres) or do you leave everything as it is, making only a part visible and to be used, those which can be reached via cellars, gardens or underground passages? The difficulty in proposing a solution is not made easier by reflecting on the problems or by carrying out a series of interventions aimed at valorising a vulnerable patrimony, which is without a doubt in need of an efficient maintenance programme.
