The examination of some Euripidean passages (Alc. 221-225; IT 1082-1088; Hel. 969-974; 1093-1106) shows that Euripides uses the common tripartite structure of the prayer, but subverts the tradional topics of the argumentation. The free revival of the schemes and the formulae of the Homeric prayer emphasizes the ambiguity of the divine benefits and shows that the gods are often unable to answer the prayers'requests, whereas sometimes the appearance of another god ex machina fulfils the request of the petitioner. Therefore, the Euripidean prayers show a very problematic conception of the divinity.

Abstract
The examination of some Euripidean passages (Alc. 221-225; IT 1082-1088; Hel. 969-974; 1093-1106) shows that Euripides uses the common tripartite structure of the prayer, but subverts the tradional topics of the argumentation. The free revival of the schemes and the formulae of the Homeric prayer emphasizes the ambiguity of the divine benefits and shows that the gods are often unable to answer the prayers'requests, whereas sometimes the appearance of another god ex machina fulfils the request of the petitioner. Therefore, the Euripidean prayers show a very problematic conception of the divinity.File in questo prodotto:
