General Linguistics The aim of this handbook is to provide a general introduction to linguistics. Whilst aimed mainly at college students, it will also be of interest to anyone else approaching this complex subject for the first time. Designed primarily for training purposes, it sets out to provide a precise but comprehensible description of the concepts and methods used in analyzing verbal language and languages. The phenomena examined are presented using examples drawn both from Italian as well as from a wide variety of other languages, with each chapter looking at particular concepts or phenomena in some depth. The book opens with two introductory chapters: the first provides an overview of world languages and the criteria for their classification, while the second aims to classify linguistics in the context of semiotics (explaining basic concepts such as language, sign, communication, etc.). The following six chapters deal in detail with the traditional levels of linguistic analysis: phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax. The volume closes with two chapters devoted to pragmatics and sociolinguistics.
