Abstract

Within the broader context of the 1590 grain shortage crisis, for many historians the main food crisis that had struck Mediterranean in the sixteenth century, the author focuses on the continual problem of grain supply in the Republic of Dubrovnik. The pattern of government intervention is reconstructed not only in the face of famine, but also in relation to the system of food administration taken as a whole. The aim of this article is to highlight the political genius and commercial enterprise with which Dubrovnik managed to secure its demands for cereals through a privileged relationship with the Ottoman Empire, here defined as Ragusa’s ‘corn diplomacy’.
