The aim of the paper is to investigate ways of creating value within education programs. The theoretical analysis allowed us to define premises useful for the realisation of the empirical research. In particular, faculties can be likened to business units defining the formative offer. Each faculty, there-fore, could apply a uniform unit method of governance to managing relations with students and avail themselves of tools commonly used in the business world. From this point of view, the value chain model identifies and links sources of value creation in an analytical and precise fashion. The empirical research, which concentrated on all the Faculties of Economy present in Italian universi-ties, set out to verify the existence of a link between the achievement of certain types of performance (increasing the number of enrolments and graduates, decreasing the number of students abandoning courses) and the implementation of specific actions aimed at enriching the value content of formative offer. The results of the field research highlight that, where governance is the result of the expression of a shared culture clearly oriented at improving performance and that has strong business principles, the overall value offer is capable of generating increased consensus from the students on the one hand, and attract public funding on the other.
