At Aesch. Pers. 481 Elmsley conjectures αἴρονται for the manuscripts' reading αἱροῦνται, and the emendation is accepted by almost all the recent editors. In this paper are examined 1) the evidence used to support Elmsley's conjecture, and in particular the loci similes [Eur.] Rh. 54 and 126; 2) the meaning and eventual function of the manuscripts' reading αἱροῦνται.
