A novel steroidal glycoside, attenuatoside A-I (I), was isolated from H. attenuata and its structure was detd. by acid methanolysis followed by 1H- and 13C-NMR of the sterol and sugar moieties; the configuration of the sugars were established by CD. The structure included 5α-cholestane-3β,6α,8,15β,26ξ-pentol aglycon attached through C-24 to a 2-O-methyl-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinofuranosyl moiety.
