The catalytic combustion of C particulate was studied to develop a catalyst to abate soot in diesel exhaust. In the presence of a Cu/V/K-based catalyst, a strong increase in the rate of C combustion and a marked decrease in the apparent activation energy were obsd. C reactivity showed a linear dependence on the initial ratio of the mass of catalyst to the mass of C and a square root dependence upon the O partial pressure. However, catalytic combustion of diesel soot and partially graphitized carbon black confirmed previous results obtained for other C materials. In particular, kinetic data followed a model proposed for the catalytic combustion of amorphous carbon black (P. Ciambelli, et.al., 1994). An extension of this model, incorporating the affect of C-catalyst contact on catalyst performance, is presented.
