The essay discusses issues of oral tradition, written tradition and music notation, and examines their role in the origins and early development of Gregorian chant. The author shows how memorization played a crucial role in both the composition and execution of the repertory. Memorization, however, was used according to strategies which reflect the strong impact of literate learning and teaching practices on the musical habits of the singers. The first part of the essay is dedicated to an overview of the different main theories of memory and orality in Gregorian chant.

Abstract
