One of the main problems in the modelling of a transport system is the level of detail required in the specification of travel demand models. The problem is all the more significant as the greater the extension and diversity of areas influenced by intervention options is. Common practice typically pursues a mono-scale approach, modelling the entire transport system using a single model, consistent with the territorial scale of the study area and indifferent to any territorial and/or transportation specificities. Such an approach, in the presence of apparent heterogeneity, can lead to under or over-estimates of modal demand flows and, therefore, to incorrect estimates of internal and external impacts on users and non-users of the transport system itself. This work proposes a multi-scale modelling architecture for estimating modal demand flows that can be generated by a new railway connection. In particular, the adaptation and upgrading of the railway connection serving the Salerno-Fisciano-Avellino link was analysed. Although serving a small area, the link induces large-scale effects by virtue of the highly integrated regional metropolitan system of which it becomes part.
