ABSTRACT After having briefly reconstructed the evolution of the policy transportation in industrialized countries, the authors stress that the organization of mobility, particularly in Italy, is characterized by evident inefficiencies resulting from a low level of integration, both “internal”, i.e. intermodal, and “external”, meaning the interconnections with other sectors of economic and social life. This consideration has been corroborated by the results obtained by analyzing a sample of Italian cities which show that the coordination of mobility is certainly not among the priorities of local governments. The following analysis highlights the untapped potential of policy transfer as a tool for designing appropriate policies to ensure an improvement in the organization of the transport market.
