The paper deals with the problem of transfer of images from one medium to another in medieval workshops. In particular the focus is on mosaic and illumination, two techniques that have long been considered implemented through the use of preparatory drawings, even without any archaeological evidence till the twelfth century. The analysis of two illuminated manuscripts and their visual sources suggests a different praxis, based on collective imagery, that is a widespread memory of σχῆματα, that is forms, gestures and narrative patterns learned by artists, musicians, poets and actors.
