This paper addresses a number of issues related to the public granaries of the Roman period, starting from the discrepancy between architectural rules in ancient agronomic sources and archaeological remains recognized as grain stores. Following the identification in 2010 of a granarium pensile near the Paestan Forum, we present a very similar Sicilian monument which so far hasn’t found a convincing interpretation. This work proposes to recognize an analogous grain warehouse with masonry pillars in the Forum of Herdonia. The issue of the granaries in Rome is examined in relation to the function of the porticus Aemilia, and to another probable integration of its epigraphic name on the Forma Urbis Romae. Finally, other grain storage buildings and hanging granaries are identified in the topography represented to the south of porticus Aemilia in the Forma Urbis.
