The "plot" of the relationship between the structures of the extraordinary intervention and international institutions: the case study Marzotto-South. The Marzotto South, clothing factory of "Marzotto Group", was built in Salerno, in January 1958, thanks to a loan provided by Isveimer with funds from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). Its history is linked with the one of the "reconstruction" and the “extraordinary intervention”, reflecting the dynamic role played, in synergy, by national institutions and international ones. Our research aims are drawing, at the outset, the initiation and evolution of the textile industry in southern Italy, and then making a reconstruction of the most significant key changes in the history of "Marzotto Group"; then, we analyzed the reasons for the strategic choice of “lateral diversification” made in 1958 by the management. The last topic, the core of our study, was examined using unpublished archived material, coming from the papers of the IBRD (only recently made available to researchers), as well as documents of the Cassa del Mezzogiorno, kept partly in the “Central State Archives” and partly by the “Ministry of Economic Development”. After a series of fluctuating results, in the early 80's the story of the Marzotto-South bitterly came to an end, with shocking effects on the socio-economic system of the South. But, this premature failure was also due to a specific market context, both domestic (failure of the economic planning) and international (oil shocks of the '70s). However, we believe that the failure of an experience should not remove the importance of an intervention model that was upright in its premises and in its goals, but went into a decline only when the Cassa del Mezzogiorno became a tool to patronage political.
