Abstract

While Sepúlveda saw in the conquest and subjugation of the American Indians a measure of punishment for their crimes against the laws of nature and the prerequisite for the propagation of the true faith, Las Casas wanted to remove from them both the punishment and the fear. It seems there was non need to punish someone when he acted in concience according to the rites of the culture to which he belonged, while only the stilness and tranquillity capable of bringen men to the science could lead to knowledge and acceptance of the truth of the Christian religion.
