The Italian paper and pulp industry occupies an important role in the domestic sector for turnover, number of firms, workers and exported goods. Its core activities include the production of several types of paper goods characterized by high consumption of water and energy sources and, consequently, by a negative impact on the environment. As a result, the sector is called upon to deal with the complex, managerial challenge of designing a new productive paradigm which by means of the diffusion of advanced, high efficiency technologies in the use of material and energy resources with a low environmental impact, will enable firms to improve their economic, energy and environmental performance. The study, analysing the specific characteristics of the paper and pulp industry, highlights the main factors underpinning the trends which in recent decades, have favoured technological innovation to reduce energy intensity and to promote ecoefficiency in productive processes.
