This article deals with the issues related to the determination of European borders as a consequence of the continental reorganization process post-1989. In particular, it focusses on the position of Ukraine that is a geographical, but also economic crossroad between Europe and Asia. The last national and international events concerning such State put in evidence, in fact, a new confrontation between the West and Russia, although in a completely changed geopolitical context. Therefore, the present article aims to think over the strength of the architecture of European security, that is represented by the action of regional organizations (OSCE, NATO, EU) challenged by the recent events in Ukraine, as well as to reflect over the foreign policy put in place by Ukraine on the one hand and EU and Russia on the other hand in relation to the Eastern European States. Furthermore, it is reflected whether it is possible to identify other subjects to restore peace in the region, such as the newly Eurasian integration process or ASEM. The result is for the moment the uncertainty for future developments considered that the contours of European security seem unbalanced in the search for what is the most affordable political and economic choice.
