In travel writings of 18th and 19th century, the critical reception of Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Herculanense Museum in the Royal Palace of Portici was part of a gaze that engaged the past aesthetically and a relevant parcel of the sweeping change which occurred in the gaze of the modern beholder. The extraordinary finds made possible to understand life in antiquity in unprecedented detail, testified to the existence of a hybrid value which offer an escape from tyranny of beautiful, also contributed to renew the ability of ancient subjects and forms to speak to modern life.

Abstract
