We experimentally investigate on the use of additive manufacturing technologies for the design and fabrication of innovative reinforcing elements of novel composite materials. Three-point bending tests and particle density analyses are performed on specimens of a cementitious mortar reinforced with 3D printed fibers made of polymeric and metallic materials. The examined fibers have cylindrical shape and exhibit different surface design and roughness. We present experimental results highlighting that the flexural strength and toughness of the examined mortar greatly depend on the surface design and the material of the reinforcing fibers. Specimens reinforced with high surface roughness fibers exhibit shear-type failure and high interlaminar shear strength, while unreinforced specimens and specimens reinforced with smooth fibers exhibit flexural-type failure and lower bonding strength.
