The strong-willed Paolo Giordano Orsini II is know to scholars for his penchant for self-promotion through the portraits of himself commissioned from Bernini and other artists active during the first half of the seventeenth century. Here traced for the first time in Orsini's hitherto little know passion for graphic art, through a previously unpublished and rare inventory of his collection of drawings and a receipt from the Dutch painter Bartholomeus Breenbergh. The author reconstructs the links between the Duke of Bracciano and the extensive community of foreign artists, especially those he maintained with Paul Bril, highlighting the catalytic role of the latter vis-à-vis his fellow countrymen and the keenness for landscapes developed by the aristocrat in the early 1620s. In addition, Orsini's relations with the French painter Simon Vouet are clarified, and identifications for the sheets described in the documents, with attributions to old masters including Francesco Salivate and Luca Cambiaso, are proposed.
Il volitivo Paolo Giordano II Orsini è noto agli studi per la sua inclinazione all’autocelebrazione attraverso le proprie effigi commissionate a Bernini e ad altri artisti della prima metà del Seicento. Appare qui delineata per la prima volta la sua passione per le arti grafiche attraverso un inedito quanto raro inventario dei disegni e una ricevuta del pittore olandese Bartholomeus Breenbergh. L’autore ricostruisce i legami del duca di Bracciano con gli artisti della folta comunità straniera, in particolare con Paul Bril, evidenziando il ruolo catalizzatore di quest’ultimo verso i suoi conterranei e la marcata passione per il vedutismo maturata dall’aristocratico agli inizi degli anni venti. Sono inoltre precisati i rapporti con il francese Simon Vouet e proposte identificazioni per i fogli descritti nelle carte e ricondotti ad antichi maestri, tra i quali Francesco Salviati e Luca Cambiaso.
