The aim of this paper is to conduct an organic reflection of the methodological perspective of Goffman, considering his reluctance in defining it. The paper explores the relationship between the student and the method analyzing the context of the social studies of the Chicago School and the epistemological keys essential to understand some of the guidelines for qualitative research. The situational and “naturalist” characters of his approach are related with a perspective that highlights the interaction analysis as a special field. The final section examines the distinctive mix of technical and empirical basis that he adopted and the peculiarities of the researcher from the specific case of an observer like Goffman.
