In this paper, the impact of the main contaminants of bioethanol (C2H4O, C3H7OH, C4H9OH and C5H11OH) on the performances of a bimetallic (Pt-Ni) catalyst supported on CeO2-ZrO2, in the form of powder as well as deposited on a SiC foam containing SiO2 or γ-AlO(OH) binders, for ethanol steam reforming in the low-temperature range was investigated. Preliminary tests were carried out on powder samples, showing that the increase of impurities carbon content caused a quasilinear growth of carbon formation rate. Moreover, the stability tests under a model mixture, containing 1 mol% of every impurity, at 450°C and a H2O/C2H5OH ratio of 6 showed the highest resistance to deactivation of boehmite-based foam catalyst which assured total ethanol conversion for more than 1 day of time-onstream.
