Size, shape and density of biomass particles influence their transportation properties. In this study, beech (Fagus ssp.) chips were sieved into diffrent size fractions and the critical silo opening width that leads to arching was measured and correlated to the Hausner ratio and angle of repose for each fraction. The relationship between the measured flow functions and the arching conditions was assessed by comparing the experimental critical outlet size values with those calculated according to the Jenike design procedure. Furthermore, a statistical model developed elsewhere was followed to provide an estimation of the flow factor of beech chips size fractions. A negative correlation was found between beech particle size and the angle of repose.
