Abstract

Before it became the Island par excellence, Ischia was represented in the classical tradition as the heart of violent conflicts between gods, nature and semi-human and primordial creatures. Besides being in contrast with the ideal of beauty and pleasantness associated with the island in the following ages, the classical view prefigured the eternal swing between Heaven and Hell that still identifies the whole Phlegrean area in collective imagination.
