The “wars of Italy” represent an important period of transition for European history. The opposition between France and Spain determines the oscillat-ing alignments of the aristocracy, which also involve the dynasties of the States of “non-Spanish” Italy. The matrimonial strategies of the nobility move in a large horizon, intertwining lineages of Central-Northern Italy with feudal families of the Kingdom of Naples. The story of Antonia del Balzo and her daughter Dorotea Gonzaga is the expression of a formal and informal power. Le “guerre d’Italia” rappresentano un importante periodo di transizione per la storia europea. La contrapposizione tra Francia e Spagna determina gli oscillanti allineamenti dell’aristocrazia, che coinvolgono anche le dinastie degli Stati signorili dell’Italia “non spagnola. Le strategie matrimoniali del-la nobiltà si muovono in un ampio orizzonte, intrecciando le sorti di in-fluenti lignaggi centro-settentrionali con i destini di potenti casate feudali del Regno di Napoli. In quest’ottica si sviluppa la storia di Antonia del Bal-zo e di sua figlia Dorotea Gonzaga, autentiche protagoniste delle vicende dell’epoca, espressione di un potere formale e informale. Nel loro operato, oltre alle tipiche doti femminili legate all’orientamento delle scelte familia-ri, emergono la fermezza e l’attitudine al comando connesse all’esercizio di una concreta autorità.
