The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of several phenomenological evidences that contributed to the birth of quantum mechanics. A detailed description of the photoelectric and Compton effect is given; then, a mention about the atomic spectra follows and a discussion about Thomson's, Rutherford's and Bohr's atomic models is provided. As evidence of quantized energy levels of atoms, the Franck–Hertz experiment is also illustrated. Finally, the chapter deals with the wave–particle duality using with the example of the celebrated double slit experiment.

Abstract
