The increase of hydrogeological disasters all over the world during the last few years has stimulated the publication of many new studies on landslide hazard and vulnerability assessment. As the scientific literature shows, historical analysis can give an important contribution to hazard prevention. The present work discusses the preliminary results of a historical study on recent flowslides (May 1998) in four towns of the Campania region (Southern Italy), which produced a high number of casualties and severe damage, especially in the town of Sarno. The authors’ analysis indicates that uncontrolled occupation of unsuitable areas largely accounts for this town’s particularly high vulnerability and that the safeguarding of human lives depends not only on stabilization works but also on efficient alarm systems and an increase of hazard awareness of the resident population in risk areas.

Abstract
The increase of hydrogeological disasters all over the world during the last few years has stimulated the publication of many new studies on landslide hazard and vulnerability assessment. As the scientific literature shows, historical analysis can give an important contribution to hazard prevention. The present work discusses the preliminary results of a historical study on recent flowslides (May 1998) in four towns of the Campania region (Southern Italy), which produced a high number of casualties and severe damage, especially in the town of Sarno. The authors’ analysis indicates that uncontrolled occupation of unsuitable areas largely accounts for this town’s particularly high vulnerability and that the safeguarding of human lives depends not only on stabilization works but also on efficient alarm systems and an increase of hazard awareness of the resident population in risk areas.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
