Undeniably stained glass windows are linked to the extraordinary development of Gothic architecture in northern Europe. However, recent studies in various fields – archaeology, archival work, history of art, and architecture – have revealed a long evolution that made its point of departure already in the early Roman empire and spread to every corner of its territories . The stained glass window was not born figured, as we habitually think of it; rather, it experienced a slow transformation or, better, was adapted to the architecture for which it was conceived. It is just this relation to architecture that we will attempt to trace here, starting with the origins of stained glass up to the beginning of the Gothic era.

Abstract
Undeniably stained glass windows are linked to the extraordinary development of Gothic architecture in northern Europe. However, recent studies in various fields – archaeology, archival work, history of art, and architecture – have revealed a long evolution that made its point of departure already in the early Roman empire and spread to every corner of its territories . The stained glass window was not born figured, as we habitually think of it; rather, it experienced a slow transformation or, better, was adapted to the architecture for which it was conceived. It is just this relation to architecture that we will attempt to trace here, starting with the origins of stained glass up to the beginning of the Gothic era.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
