The TEWI linked to a vapour compression running plant is worldwide acknowledged as the most correct index for evaluating the environmental impact of the plant in terms of “greenhouse effect”. Unfortunately, its value depends on a lot of independent variables. Most of them take on defined values for fixed plant type, size and operating conditions; but the evaluation of the remaining ones, particularly of the GWP, still remain uncertain. In this paper, a simplified criterion for evaluating the minimum contribution to the “greenhouse effect” of a vapour compression system is developed and applied to some general cases by means of a graphical method pointed out by our research group. The criterion is based on grouping the independent variables which influence the final evaluation of the TEWI. Then charts have been drawn and employed for a quick evaluation of the environmental impact of the system in the cases examined.
