Photocatalysis can be classified among advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment. Photocatalysis is mainly applied for the oxidation and/or mineralization of organic compounds, reduction of inorganic species, and disinfection of water and wastewater. The role of catalyst is to accelerate the rate of the reaction without being consumed during the process. The main mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis (HPC) is the formation of highly reactive and non-selective hydroxyl radicals upon irradiation of semiconductor particles (catalyst) with near UV radiation. The photo-generated electron-hole pairs can migrate to the surface of semiconductor particle to form oxidizing species in the presence of oxygen. Many materials such as TiO2, ZnO, ZrO2, CdS, MoS2, Fe2O3, WO3 and their various combinations have been studied as photocatalysts as well as different water and wastewater matrix were investigated. The main objective of the present work is to review the papers available in scientific literature dealing with xenobiotics degradation and detoxification as well as water and wastewater treatment by HPC.

Abstract
The main objective of the present work is to review the papers available in scientific literature dealing with xenobiotics degradation and detoxification as well as water and wastewater treatment by HPC.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
