The private documents from the medieval area of Cilento are relevant for their consistency and continuity. This area includes some of the most important dependencies of the Benedictine Abbey of Cava, such as St. Arcangelo of Perdifumo, St. Magno, St. Lucia, St. Fabian and St. John of Tresino. For this reason the papers are suitable for the study of some closely diplomatistic aspects that allow to trace the evolutionary process of the editorial procedures adopted. The chronological span that has been considered ranges from the end of the Lombard rule to the first three decades of the twelfth century: it’s a transitional period characterized both by the persistence of documentary structures that are typical of the Lombard age (especially Chartula and Memoratorium) and also by the use of mixed forms and clauses of corroboration. These are also marked by the presence of the subscriptions of witnesses, as opposed to the simultaneous supremacy of the figure of the judge who had ensured for a long time in the area of Salerno the publica fides to private documents. Only since the XII century, the opening of the text on behalf of the judge and his subscription enable the documents from the area of Cilento to be assimilated to those specifically found in the area of Salerno.
