High porosity monolithic aerogels can be obtained from syndiotatic polystyrene thermoreversible gels by supercritical CO2 extraction of the solvent present in the native gel. Depending on the gel and on the extraction prodecure, aerogels with different crystalline forms, morphologies and porosities can be obtained. The fast kinetics and high sorption capacity of VOCs from aqueous solutions by sPS aerogels with microporous crystalline phases as well as their good handling characteristics make these new materials particularly suitable as a sorption medium to remove traces of pollutants from water and air. Different aspects relative to the preparation, the structure and the sorption properties of these new polymeric materials are described.
