This chapter presents an analysis of Plat. Resp. 7.530b-531d and gives an account of the Plato’s conception of musical theory, within the frame of the intellectual education of the dialectical philosophers who are destined to manage the State. The discussion is focused on the ways in which Plato criticises and entirely rejects both the empirical and the Pythagorean approaches to the discipline that were common at his times, envisaging a new foundation of it, on the basis of totally antiempirical principles.

Abstract
This chapter presents an analysis of Plat. Resp. 7.530b-531d and gives an account of the Plato’s conception of musical theory, within the frame of the intellectual education of the dialectical philosophers who are destined to manage the State. The discussion is focused on the ways in which Plato criticises and entirely rejects both the empirical and the Pythagorean approaches to the discipline that were common at his times, envisaging a new foundation of it, on the basis of totally antiempirical principles.File in questo prodotto:
