The Italian energy system has to face – both an a local and global level - an array of challenges characterized by high complexity. This is deriving from known structural weaknesses as well as market liberalisation together European and international environmental policies. The present paper aims at analysing the national electricity system in order to examine the role of innovations and their environmental sustainability.
