In the current phase of economic recession, territory competitiveness on the one hand and the desire on the other, of tourists to enjoy genuine travel experiences to enrich their creative capital, have combined to determine the diffusion of creative tourism. The phenomenon has induced eminent international scholars to investigate on a scientific scale, (for example Greg Richards and his strand of research) its fundamental characteristics in the context of particular geographical realities and at the same time, to propose the putting in place of initiatives capable of satisfying the creative motivations of consumers. Therefore, the present contribution, once the substantial differences of this particular market segment compared with cultural and experiential tourism have been evidenced, aims to delineate the main guidelines for developing creative tourism, the co-creation of genuine values; the enhancement of local culture and skills by means of a systems approach, all of which constitute the challenges on the horizon, for tourism to represent an innovative strategic lever for the growth and development of creative local communities.
