Despite the huge number of scientific papers concerning the spare parts management, the traditional gap between theory and industrial practice remains still today unfilled. The purpose of the paper is to design and to develop an integrated methodology for spare parts management which, starting from a proposed classification method, provides the selection of the most suitable stock management policy, taking into account the criticality profile of each item. The methodology has been tested in an important Italian factory working in the beverage industry, showing encouraging outcomes in terms of effective applicability to a real industry. The methodology can be used by the maintenance material planner as a tool to classify spare parts and to choose the inventory control models basing on the peculiarities of spare parts; further on, it represents a tangible effort of bridging the gap between research and practice in the spare parts management.
