The present paper summarizes a study on masonry vaults, with the purpose of un-derstanding their building aspects, interpreting their actual structural behavior, and identifying proper interventions which are compatible with the typical characteristics of historical constructions. The interpretation of the historical technical literature, the formulation of a rigorous theory of structural analysis, and the critical study on the possible strengthening techniques and thrust containment methods have led to verify the efficiency of some types of intervention on masonry vaults, with particular reference to the insertion of tie rods.
