The mechanical behavior of composite products is determined not only by the lay-up of the composite but also by the parameters and stability of the manufacturing process. The manufacturing process for composites can often be controlled by means of a reduced number of parameters, such as temperature and pressure. However, changes in the temperature, pressure, and rates of change in temperature and pressure dramatically influence the final product. This chapter deals with some issues related to composite manufacturing and control. Fundamentals of processing design and control are pointed out, including basic notions concerning process simulation, neural networks, fuzzy control systems and some optimization algorithms. What is more, candidate technologies for sensing, namely fiber optics, elastic waves based sensors, dielectric sensors, and microelectromechanical systems, are commented, discussing pros and contra.
