Some modern flessible patterns of international organizations: the Union for the Mediterranean

The present work aims at analyzing the different patterns of international organizations that since the 70s have developed following a direction opposite to an earlier stage of strong “institutionalization” inaugurated with the League of Nations in 1919 and then with the Organization of the United Nations (ONU) in 1945. Despite the perspectives of studying the law of international organizations as a separate field of study, such latest patterns are not considered univocally by the scholarship. After some preliminary and necessary general considerations, the analysis will concern the Mediterranean area and in particular the well-known Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), that is another more recent pattern of cooperation between the Mediterranean countries, in order to highlight, on one hand, the characteristics of this model and, on the other hand, the difficulties of government in this area, as well as of global governance, which experiments new and old mechanisms and instruments.
