Salerno: la ricerca archeologica tra gli anni 2014-2016

This contribution presents the results of the latest archaeological research and excavations, mainly lead by the “Laboratorio N. Cilento per l’Archeologia Medievale” of the University of Salerno; the key factors determining the urbanistic development of Salerno are identified in the structure of the water system, based on rivers, brooks, “lavinai”, aqueducts and balnea. To understand the development of the town in the central Middle Ages are considered the artisanal settlements, as the Islamic in the area nowadays called “Cittadella Giudiziaria” and the Jewish one, probably committed to trade and the textiles production, in the Southern city district, called “Judaica”. Fundamental issues in the development of the Norman town are de private buildings erected by noble family groups, which, linked with the nearest churches, became aggregation centres in the late medieval city.
