If the historical or new historical novel is already, in itself, a hybrid genre in which registers and fields of fiction and reality co-exist oxymoronically, it is even more complex in the case of the “new, short, historical narrative”, with its yet only partially researched profile, which defies any definition, unless that of the larger genre, and oscillates in its lexical definition too: nouvelle, short novel, tale, long story (in Spanish nouvelle, cuento, relato, novela breve, cuento largo). Another element which is involved in the in-definition of genre is the particular form of publication, never ‘independently’, but in a magazine or compiled together with other historical stories, in a volume of varying stories or of ‘historical’ stories which tend to form a meaningful macro-text that differs from the individual texts analyzed separately. It is frequently the case that the passage of the text from an autonomous collocation to a collection of similar-type stories influences the reading and the meaning of the text itself. After singling out certain ‘canonic’ texts, some Argentinian authors, such as Osvaldo Soriano (Cuentos de los años felices, 1993) and María Rosa Lojo (Historias ocultas de la Recoleta, 1999, Amores insólitos de nuestra historia, 2007) will be analyzed.
